Box Car Children- Chapter 13: A New Home for the Boxcar

Chapter 13

Chapter Summary
The children see their grandfather's mansion for the first time. He has each of their rooms redone to suit them-Violet's room with Violets everywhere, Benny's room with toys and a train set, and even Jessie's room has a bed for Watch. The children learn to love their grandfather and his home, but as time goes on they begin to is the boxcar and their old things. Mr. Alden comes up with a plan. With the children away, he has the boxcar brought to his home and put in the garden. Complete with the old stump, everything is just as in the woods. The children are all delighted and they all live happily ever after.

We just finished the last chapter of the book "The Boxcar Children" and Lily and Aj loved reading the story and completing all the activities. After we finished the story we took a field trip to Edaville Railroad with family.

Fine Arts- Picture of Favorite Part of the Story, Making Paper Dolls
Lily and Aj drew a picture of their favorite part of the story and they also made paper dolls and a paper scene. They used the paper dolls to act out the story of the boxcar children. (They used a real G gauge train car too!)

Language Arts-
Lily and Aj answered review questions about the story.

Box Car Children Chapter 12- James Henry and Henry James

Chapter 12

Chapter Summary
Without telling the children, Dr Moore invites Mr. Alden over to the house. The Two men decide to let the children get to know their grandfather before introducing him. He slowly gets acquainted with Benny and then Violet. Henry, after hearing Mr. Alden says "my boy," remembers he was the man who was at the free-for -all. Putting pieces together, he introduces himself to his grandfather. The moment of truth arrives for all the children and the happy family is finally reunited. When Violet is well, the four children, their grandfather, Dr. Moore and his mother all go and see the boxcar. After a final meal by the brook, the children and Watch set off to spend some time with their grandfather at his house.

We didn't spend very much time on this chapter. Lily and Aj wanted to keep reading since the book only has one chapter left.

BoxCar Children- Chapter 11: The Doctor Takes A Hand

Chapter 11

Chapter Summary-
Days go by and the children are happy and well. Jessie makes Benny a stocking bear out of his old stockings! Benny Decides to cut Watch's hair. The result of the haircut is so funny looking Violet begins to laugh. Jessie laughs,too, but Violet doesn't stop. She begins to cry and shake. Jessie, worried, puts her in the boxcar and covers her with pine needles. When Henry returns from work, Violet is no better. Afraid to go the hospital, Henry goes for Dr Moore. The good doctor immediately rushes back to the boxcar, and without Henry's directions, seems to drive right to it. Bringing Violet home to his house he and Mrs. Moore arrange a beds for all the children. DR. Moore stays up all night with violet. The Following morning the doctor notifies the children's grandfather, James Henry Alden, that he has some information regarding the children.

Jessie makes Benny a darling little bear out of an old sock. Lily and Aj used cut up old clothes and practiced sewing by hand and with their sewing machine.

Box Car Children- Chapter 10: Henry and the Free for All

Chapter 10

Chapter Summary-

James Henry Alden (The Children Grandfather) along with three other wealthy men in the area, annually sponsors a field day for the town of Silver City and Greenfield. Field Day is a major event and even the mills clothes down and everyone comes out for the various footraces.

Henry is cutting Dr. Moore's grass when the doctor tells him to go the races. The doctor cant go, but wants Henry to tell him who wins. When Henry gets to the races, he hears about the final race called the free for all. The race is open to everyone. Henry enters and wins the silver cup and $25.00 prize! His grandfather(unbeknownst to both of them) hands him the prize. Henry returns home, exuberant from his victory, and gives Jessie the money. Henry retells the tale of the race and the children eat a wonderful dinner of baked potatoes.

History and Geography- Industrial Revolution
Mills play a big part in the employment opportunity of Silver City and Greenfield. These cities are where our book takes place. Mills played an important part in the Industrial revolution in the 1800's. We decided to take this opportunity to learn about the industrial revolution. We watched a you-tube video, colored a workbook and read books about it.

Fine Arts-Potato Prints
Lily and Aj made stamps by carving potatoes. Then they made beautiful stamp paintings with them.

Box Car Children- Chapter 9: Fun in the Cherry Orchard

Chapter 9

Chapter Summary: The day Dr. Moore had invited the Children to pick cherries arrives, and they decide to all go and help. Concerned that someone might spot four children walking and turn them in to their grandfather, the children walk two by two and soon arrive at the orchard. A long day is spent picking cherries and at the end, the children leave four dollars richer and loaded with baskets of cherries. After they leave, the good doctor reads an announcement in the newspaper put in by the children's grandfather. The announcement says four children are missing and a $5,000 dollar reward is offered for their whereabouts. The doctor is amazed to find out the children belong to the richest man in the area but decides not to turn them in right away.

Both children completed a math word problem worksheet about cherry's.

Geography, Science - Field trips
We talked about different fruit regions and where the story took place again. The kids and I talked about why some fruits are more expensive then others at the grocery store. We went to the store and bought apples, bananas, cherries and blueberries. We also talked about our field trip last month to an apple orchard.We all had a great time picking apples.
