Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

This book is one of Ajs favorites. Lily enjoyed reading it too. We did so many activities along with the book!

Science-(steam power,heat,life characteristics)
We did an experiment using pin wheels and hot water. Lily and Aj loved learning how steam produces power. They also colored a diagram of a steam engine. I sent them on a hunt around the house to find all the heating grates. A trip to the basement helped them learn how our house is heated. While doing a worksheet about living things, the kids learned living things need air, water and food to survive.

Language-(literature,personification,writing)
We learned that personification is a thing, quality or idea that is represented as a person.Lily and Aj thought of creative names for their favorite toys, home and our family car. Aj wanted to name our car turtle. Lily and Aj learned how to write postcards.

Social studies-(history,life in a small town)
We placed our story disk on the United states. The kids decided thats where the story takes place. We started out by building a cellar with our blocks. Lily and Aj built a town hall with Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel on the inside. Then they built a town around the town hall. We took a field trip to the Cape Cod Canal Museum where we watched a movie about the history of the canal. We learned that steam shovels helped to build the canal many years ago.

Mathematics-(Geometry)
We used peg boards to make shapes.

Art-(Drawing Trees,landscape)
Lily and Aj learned how to draw different types of trees. They looked in the book at all the trees and then made their own. After they made their trees that drew the rest of their landscape. They also added stickers of construction vehicles to their drawings. Lily did more then one drawing!!!

Fun Activities we did along with the book!-
We made and ate a square cake. Lily did a maze and we drew pictures of what we could find if we dug a hole with a steam shovel.

Books and movies we used.
