Summary: Janie Learns about partings and reunions, closeness and distance in All Those Secrets of the World. 





Social Studies: (Geography-Virginia)
The setting for All Those Secrets of the World is in the state of Virginia. We placed our story disk on the map of the United States. Then we learned about the state of Virginia by reading a book and doing a worksheet.




Social Studies: (Patriotism, Betsy Ross)
The kids learned that the American Flag symbolizes patriotism-loyalty and pride for ones country. In the story Janie waves the flag when sending off soldiers to war. We read books about Betsy Ross and the American flag. The kids also colored pictures of flags, made a puzzle and did a fact worksheet on Betsy Ross.


Language Arts: (First Person Point of View, Writing, Letter B)
The story is told through the viewpoint of a four year old. We talked about how to tell a story using this point of view. I had the kids tell stories using my, I,  me and we. Lily also wrote a few sentence about Betsy Ross while Aj did a worksheet on the letter B.
Art: (American Flag Collage, Field Trip, View Point)
The kids used construction paper and cutouts to make American Flag collages. We also talked about viewpoints. We took a field trip to the beach where we took turns changing our viewpoint to see how when things move far away they look smaller.

Mathematics: (Patterns, Sizes, Counting by 2's)
The kids did 2 worksheets about patterns and sizes. We also practiced counting by 2's. 


Science: (Oil on Water, Pollution)
In the story the children were warned not to play in the water because it was dirty with oil. Lily and Aj did an experiment about oil spills. They learned the dangers of oil spills and how oil floats on the surface of water. We also read a few books.

Experiment- I made crude oil using coffee grinds and vegetable oil. The kids poured the mixture into water with blue food coloring. Then we placed sea animals into our container. ( We made a polluted ocean.)




The next step was to try to clean up our oil spill. The kids used a sponge, cotton balls and paper towels to see what absorbs oil the best. They found cotton balls to pick up the most crude oil.



The last step was saving the animals using dawn and water. The saved all of the sea animals!
