Little House on the Prairie - Six Week Class

 This was the 6 week class I organised for our homeschool co-op. Every week the children had a book read to them, examined an antique based on the time periods and completed a craft.

Week 1-
We read the picture book Going West. This book is from the My First Little House series. The kids examined an antique camera from the late 1700's and  actual photographs. Then they dressed up in pioneer cloths to have there picture taken. They used their photographs to make the front cover of their journals. We discussed why people didn't take pictures with smiles. Then we talked about what a pioneer is and why journals are an important part of our history.

Week 2- 

We read the Little House My First Picture book Prairie Day. Then the kids looked at antique horse equipment and they made covered wagons. They also wrote in journals and did a connect the dot work sheet.

Week 3-
The children read A Little Prairie House. We then talked about Abraham Lincoln and how he grew up in a log cabin. They also got to examine money from the 1800's and the kids made a log cabin out of popsicle sticks and construction paper.

                                  

Week 4-
The children read Winter Days In the Big Woods. They were able to try washing clothes on an antique wash board. They also examined a power horn that was used for hunting in the 1800's. Today's craft was making a quilt from construction paper and coloring paper dolls.

Week 5-
The children read Going West and we talked about My Little House Cook Book. They were able to examine and use antique stamps from the 1800's. They also made butter from heavy whipping cream and salt. After they made the butter they ate some with crackers. They also put together small Prairie books.

Week 6-
Today's was the last little house on the prairie class and it  was super fun. The kids read a Little House Birthday and did fun activities to go along with the book. They made button necklaces, looked at an antique horse and antique buttons. They played pick up sticks, Jacobs ladder, jump rope, tug of war and had a tree legged race.

This was a fun six weeks of classes!
