BoxCar Children- Chapter 8 : A Swimming Pool at Last

Chapter 8
Chapter Summary:
The next morning Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny begin on the swimming pool project. They measure the depth of the pool and, discovering it one foot, they determine they will need three feet for a good swimming hole. Then, using Benny's cart to haul stones, they will begin to build the dam across the brook. After a lot of hard work, the children successfully create a three-foot deep swimming pool.

Jessie and Violet cook lunch while the boys take the first swim. After a wonderful lunch of leftover stew, they set off for a walk. Exploring the woods, Benny finds an abandoned chicken's nest (he saw the chickens running away). They collect the five eggs, and Jessie makes a wonderful dinner from Benny's discovery.

The egg s an amazing thing! You can eat and egg or allow it to be incubated and hatch into a bird! In our story , Benny finds eggs in the woods- abandoned by a chicken mother. Jessie cooks the Eggs and the children have a wonderful meal. Lily and Aj learned all the parts of the egg. They cracked an egg opened drew a picture of what they saw on the inside. Then they watched 2 videos on you-tube about eggs and chickens hatching. They also made an egg diagram book, played a game about the life cycle of a chicken, did a cross word and colored a picture.

Fine Arts: Cooking- Eggs, Thinking Outside the Box
Lily and Aj made their own lunch of scrambled eggs and English Muffins. This is the first time they have used the stove by themselves to make Eggs. They both did a great job! They also had to think "Outside of the Box" to make a picture using an egg shaped object.
