June Book Station

This month I am taking some time off from our crazy schedule. We are going to be reading about summer and summer fun!

Here are my picks!

Lily and Aj's picks! Can u guess who picked which books and movies?

Storm in the night!

Title- Storm in the night
Author- Mary Stolz
Illustrator- Pat Cummings
Copyright- 1988
Summary- Grandfather addresses Thomas' fear of thunderstorms by vulnerably relating a story of his own childhood.

The story Storm In the Nightwas very appropriate for this time of year. We have had a very rainy and stormy spring. Lily and Aj were alway very frightened and nervous around thunder and lightning but after reading the book Storm in the Night they are not afraid anymore. We also read a book called Thundercake written by Patricia Polacco which both kids loved. Thundercake is a book about a Grandmother and granddaughter making a cake in a thunderstorm. It brings new meaning and possibility to the excitement to a thunderstorm. Its a must read also!!

Social studies-(Story disk)- We put our story disk on top of the world map because their is weather all over the globe!

Social Studies-(Emotions)
In this book Thomas and his grandfather talked about their feelings so we decided to learn about ours. We read tons of books about our emotions and we talked about how we were feeling. Lily and Aj also looked at our feelings chart! They decorated cookies with happy faces too!

Science-(Clouds,weather,weather cycle)
Lily and Aj learned all about different types of weather. We read tons of books, watched movies, did arts and crafts, experiments and worksheets.

We did an experiment using cotton balls and water to learn about the weather cycle.

Lily and Aj made a weather graph to monitor the weather every day for the week. They also made charts, colored pictures, did a book about the water cycle and did a few worksheets. Last but not least we learned some fun weather rhymes.

Books and movies-

Art-(acrylic paint,medium)
Acrylic paints allow white to be applied over color. Lily and Aj used Acrylic paints just like in the story to create their own paintings of a Storm in the Night. They used the white after they used all the other colors to make rain!

Language-(Onomatopoeia)
The author of the story Mary Stolz wrote a story that has many poetic elements. Onomatopoeia is a word that makes the sound of an object when you say it. I talked about this with Lily and Aj. The kids thought of words that did just that. They even worked as a team to draw a picture of a stormy night. Then we wrote sound effects into the picture.

Mathematics-(Estimation,counting)
Lily and Aj did a work seat about raindrops. They estimated home many raindrops made up one big drop! They then counted the drops by ones and tens! Lily guessed 100 and she was right!!
