Owl Moon

Title: Owl Moon
Author: Jane Yolen
Illustrator: John Schoenherr
Copyright:1987
Award: Caldecott Medal
Summary: A young child experiences a look at nature- a look that turns to out to be too special for words.
Lily and Aj reading enjoyed this book and loved watching the movie. They learned a lot about owls and other nocturnal animals.

Social Studies: (Setting, New Jersey) The setting of the story takes place in a wooded area in a northern state. I chose to have the children learn about New Jersey because we haven't learned about it yet. We read two books and did a worksheet about the flag, state bird and flower. We placed our story disc on our world map and located the state on the USA map. The kids also listened and learned about music sung by Frank Sinatra because he grew up in New Jersey.

Language arts- (Poetic Language, Metaphors, simile)
The Text of the book is filled with phrases like "I am like a shadow" or "I was a shadow as we walked home". These phrases and many others like it are metaphors or similes. I discussed what these terms mean and the kids and I made up many of our own. We also read the poem The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear and played a game with  the poem 5 Little Owls by Lucia Kemp Henry. Lily helped Aj learn some three letter words. (ie. Owl)

Mathematics-(units of time)
I played a game to review time with Lily and introduce time with Aj. We also read a book about time.

Art-(Painting, Art and Crafts)
We made paper plate owls using paint and construction paper.

Science:(Owls, Birds)
The kids worked on making a book together about owls. They also played a bird board game, read books, watched a movie and colored a picture about owls.

Field trip-( Miss Kim Science Class)
We went to the library  and took a class about nocturnal animals. Miss Kim gave a lecture, read a book and Lily and Aj did arts and crafts.
