An entertaining book which gave us the opportunity to learn about birds, New York and comic strips. The kids enjoyed all the activities that went along with this book!
Social Studies- (City Living, New York)
This story doesn't have a specific geographic locality. It takes place in a city. It's a large city because of all the tall building, apartments and vendors in the pictures. We decided to place our story disk on New York. We talked about apartment living and each child made an apartment out of a shoebox. The kids also did a work sheet on New York and we looked up the city in a book about the United States.
Language arts- (Writing, Reading, Sight-words, Copy Work)
Lily read a poem about birds out loud to her brother then they both worked on finding sight words in a short paragraph. Then they copied different types of bird species names and wrote a sentence using the words "red birds". They also described and wrote about nests.
Lily and Alex practiced counting and writing number words and did a cut and paste work sheet using left and right. These math worksheets all had a bird theme!
Science- (Birds)
In this story the main character, Albert was able to learn a great deal about cardinals from his observations. We were able to observe different nests, eggs and bird skeletons with some of our homeschool friends. First the children were read a book about eggs and birds. Then they were able to examine and measure nests and eggs from different types of birds. The children tried to determine which bird went with each egg and nest. They also learned why birds have hollow bones and many other interesting facts. They where able to handle bird bones and play a matching game with them.

In this story Albert loves to read comics. We decided to draw our own comics. We read books about comics and how to draw them.
Chefs Corner- The kids worked together to make chocolate birds nest. I think they ate more chocolate nests then they made! This was a simple recipe using coconut, chocolate and jelly beans.
We volunteered our time to clean a local beach and help put up fences for Pipping Plovers. These birds are endangered. The kids learned about the birds habitat and how to help the Environment.
