Pumpkin Runner

Title: Pumpkin Runner
Author: Marsha Diane Arnold
Illustrator: Brad Sneed
Copyright:1998
Summary: Set in Australia. Joshua, a man who loves to eat pumpkins, runs a race that has everyone noticing.

Our Latest book is based on a true story. It combines love of running and pumpkins. Lily and Aj enjoyed reading this book and the activities that went along with it.

Social Studies-(Geography-Australia)
The authors idea for the story of the Pumpkin Runner comes from a true incident which happened in Australia. This is why we placed our story disk on Australia. The kids did a mapping project, colored a flag, learned about Australian animals, inventions, food and instruments. They watched a You-Tube video on Australian instruments. We talked about the Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, Sydney and Melbourne. We also read two books.

Language Arts- (Creative Writing, Fable)
The kids wrote stories about hot air balloons. We also read the story of  The Tortoise and the Hair. Lily and Aj learned that a fable is a short story that teachers some kind of moral.

Mathematics -(Measuring, Weight)
The children measured and weighed pumpkins. They recorded their results on 2 worksheets. They also did a unit and took a test on their online school Time for Leaning about capacity and the metric system.

Art-(Perspective)
In this story Pumpkin Runner the illustrator uses perspective to create depth in his pictures. The kids wanted to learn about perspective so they made drawings of hot air balloons with there home school co-op class. They used crayons, markers, objects to trace and large paper. Their pictures came out wonderful.

Science-(Bones, Muscles, Skeletal System)
The Pumpkin Runner gives us the opportunity to study bones, joints and ligaments. The kids have been learning about the Skeletal system all month. They made skeletons and did many other projects. Please follow the link to learn about all the activities and experiments they have done. We have been using the Exploring Creation science book.

Chefs Corner- The kids help make pumpkin pie and pumpkin pasta sauce for dinner one night. This is a tasty go along with our pumpkin theme!

Field Trip to Pick Pumpkins at Sauchuck  Farm-
Lily and Aj picked pumpkins and learned about farms. They also made there way through a corn maze!

Other books we read this month were about hot air balloons and fall harvest!

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for our next book!
