Marie Curie: Chapter 5- The Turning Point

Chapter Summary-
Finally, Manya has finished her work as a governess! She continues to work to help her sister and father in order to save more money. Manya studies chemistry and works on experiment at the floating University. There many polish studies learn mathematics and polish in secret. Soon in 1891 Manya decides to go to Paris and attend the Sorbonne. She has enough Money, and her sister has invited Manya to love with her. Manya finds it difficult to leave hr father, but he knows its the best think for his daughter.


What we will cover in this chapter:
History and Geography: Baltic Sea
Science: Chemistry-Experiments
Language Arts- Reading, Comprehension, Verbs : Recognize and use interesting verbs


History and Geography: Baltic Sea
Manya went with her employers family to the Baltic Sea when she was a governess. We found the Baltic Sea on a map. Then the kids colored in the Baltic Sea on a worksheet. 





Language Arts- Reading, Comprehension, Verbs : Recognize and use interesting verbs
Lily and Aj read the book Baltic Rescue by John Rouselle. After reading the story they completed an online quiz and a worksheet about Verbs.

Baltic Rescue Book Summary-
One cold winter day in Poland, a dog walked to the river's edge and found himself suddenly floating away on a sheet of ice. Trapped on his raft of ice, the dog drifted down the river for four days, traveling more than 75 miles from where he started. Finally, a research ship on the Baltic Sea spotted him and its crew rescued the dog, soon to be known as Baltic.







Science: Chemistry-Experiments- 
Lily and Aj used their Science Lab kit to conduct chemistry experiments. They used the step by step guide in the kit to do experiments such as Gravity-Defying water, identify the gas and more....

Marie Curie: Chapter 4- The Sacrifice

Chapter 4 summary
 Manya works hard to earn money by teaching children as a governess. She works for a few different families before she finds a family who pays her enough money. She works hard for 3 years and continues to educate herself. She also finds she loves science and mathematics. She knows that if she works hard it will soon be her turn to attend university.

What we will cover in this chapter-
Science: Sugar from beets
Science: Economics
Language Arts: Copy work

Science: Sugar from beets
The kids watched 2 videos about sugar beets. The first video was from the discovery channel and how a manufacturing plant produces large amount of sugar from the vegetable. The second was a YouTube video about to make your own sugar from the sugar beet at home in your kitchen. Both videos were interesting and we the kids learned a lot of facts and information about the beet.




 Science: Economics
Lily and Aj took notes on an online Economics course on YouTube.





Language Arts: Copy work
Lily and Aj copied a quote Freon Marie Curie in their best cursive handwriting. The quote was about being a governess to help her sister through school.

Marie curie- Chapter 3: Growing up

Chapter Summary-
Manya, along with her siblings, graduate from high school with honors. Manya takes a year off and spends time in the country with his relatives. She has a wonderful time and returns home. She is ready to work hard and help her family. Manya takes a job as a governess to help her sister attend medical school. She does not regret her decision even though she wants to go to school too.

What we will learn in this chapter:
History and Geography- The Alpes  and the Carpathian Mountains
Science: Louis Pasteur
Fine Arts- Kulig Streamers and Sleigh Bells



History and Geography- The Alpes and the Carpathian Mountains
Lily and Aj found the Carpathian and the Alps on a map. They then watched a video and completed a reading comprehension worksheet about European Mountain Ranges. 




Science: Louis Pasteur
The kids watched a video about Louis Pasteur and his discovers on Germ Theory and Pasteurization. They also read about Pasteur and completed a worksheet. 





Fine Arts- Kulig Streamers
The kids enjoyed completing an arts and class project using markers , glue and scissors. They created polish ribbons that would. Be found on a sleigh at a Kulig. (Winter festival)

Marie Curie- Chapter 2 The Painful Years


Marie Curie Chapter 2

Chapter Summary-
The Family continues the struggle financially and they are forced to move several times from apartment to apartment. They even bring boarders to live with them for extra money. Manya is forced to sleep in the dinning room. Mrs. Sklodowska her mother passes away and so does Zosia, Manya’s sister.

Manya continues to be brave and works hard in school. She studies in secret to learn all about Poland, her people and their history. 


What we will cover in this chapter: 
History and Geography- Polish Culture
Science- Tuberculosis, Typhoid fever




 Science- Tuberculosis, Typhoid Fever 
Manya’s mother dies of Tuberculosis and her sister passes away fro Typhoid Fever. Lily and Aj had questions about what these diseases are. We decided to spend time watching videos about these diseases to find out more about them. We found informational videos on YouTube. 




History and Geography- Polish Culture
Lily and Aj watched a video about Polish Culture. They learned about Kulig, which is a winter festival. They also listened to polish music.

Marie Curie Chapter 1 - Small Beginings


 Marie Curie- Chapter 1

Summary- In the first chapter we meet the young Marie Curie. When she was born her name was Manya Sklodowska- her family calls her Manya. They live in Poland. Her mother is a principal for a girls school. Her father is a professor of math and physics. 

The Sklodowska family is poor. They live in an apartment within the school where their father teaches. Manya’s parents raise their children with a fierce pride in polish heritage. At this time in history Poland was ruled by Russia, Austria and germany. She is taught Polish history even though it is not allowed to be taught in the schools. Manya’s parents soon discovery that she is very bright and she learns very quickly.  


What we will cover in this chapter-
History and Geography: Exploring the 1800’s, Poland
Science: Barometers and scientific insterments, A brief intro to Physics
Language Arts- Reading Comprehension, Marie Curie

History and Geography: Exploring the 1800’s, Poland
In the opening of the story we learn that the Skoldowska Family lives in Poland. The kids learn about the history of Poland in a 3 part series that we found on YouTube. They also completed 2 worksheets about the geography of Poland. They also colored the flag of Poland. 








                     Science: Barometers and scientific insterments, 
A brief intro to Physics
Lily and Aj learned about different scientific insterments. They completed a worksheet and a matching cut and past activity.  The also completed a introduction to Physics class where they took notes about important information. 









Language Arts- Reading Comprehension, Marie Curie 
The kids read a worksheet about the life of Marie Curie and answered questions about her.

The kids loved reading this book because not only did they get to learn a lot about a famous scientist, they also got to see other sides of her and learn little facts that not many people know about. She was also the first woman to win a nobel prize, and she did many things for women that are very commendable. What a great role model!
