Box Car Children- Chapter 10: Henry and the Free for All

Chapter 10

Chapter Summary-

James Henry Alden (The Children Grandfather) along with three other wealthy men in the area, annually sponsors a field day for the town of Silver City and Greenfield. Field Day is a major event and even the mills clothes down and everyone comes out for the various footraces.

Henry is cutting Dr. Moore's grass when the doctor tells him to go the races. The doctor cant go, but wants Henry to tell him who wins. When Henry gets to the races, he hears about the final race called the free for all. The race is open to everyone. Henry enters and wins the silver cup and $25.00 prize! His grandfather(unbeknownst to both of them) hands him the prize. Henry returns home, exuberant from his victory, and gives Jessie the money. Henry retells the tale of the race and the children eat a wonderful dinner of baked potatoes.

History and Geography- Industrial Revolution
Mills play a big part in the employment opportunity of Silver City and Greenfield. These cities are where our book takes place. Mills played an important part in the Industrial revolution in the 1800's. We decided to take this opportunity to learn about the industrial revolution. We watched a you-tube video, colored a workbook and read books about it.

Fine Arts-Potato Prints
Lily and Aj made stamps by carving potatoes. Then they made beautiful stamp paintings with them.

Language Arts- Review Questions

The children completed worksheets about Chapter 10.

Box Car Children- Chapter 9: Fun in the Cherry Orchard

Chapter 9

Chapter Summary: The day Dr. Moore had invited the Children to pick cherries arrives, and they decide to all go and help. Concerned that someone might spot four children walking and turn them in to their grandfather, the children walk two by two and soon arrive at the orchard. A long day is spent picking cherries and at the end, the children leave four dollars richer and loaded with baskets of cherries. After they leave, the good doctor reads an announcement in the newspaper put in by the children's grandfather. The announcement says four children are missing and a $5,000 dollar reward is offered for their whereabouts. The doctor is amazed to find out the children belong to the richest man in the area but decides not to turn them in right away.

Lily and Aj completed a Review worksheet about the chapter.

Both children completed a math word problem worksheet about cherry's.

Geography, Science - Field trips
We talked about different fruit regions and where the story took place again. The kids and I talked about why some fruits are more expensive then others at the grocery store. We went to the store and bought apples, bananas, cherries and blueberries. We also talked about our field trip last month to an apple orchard.We all had a great time picking apples.

Box Car Children: Chapter 7- A Big Meal from Little Onions

Chapter 7-
Chapter Summary:

         The morning after hearing the strange noise, Henry and Jessie discuss the situation. Deciding it must have been a person in the woods, Henry advises Jessie not to leave the younger children unattended. Jessie agrees and after a brief conversation with Benny about a new "building" project, Henry leaves for work. When he arrives at Dr. Moore's home, he is quickly put to work thinning vegetables in the garden. Mrs. Moore, the doctor's mother, gives him a dollar at noon, compliments him on hiss job, and asks him to return after lunch. Henry is able to take the little vegetables he thinned home with him and on the way purchases some meat.

         While he was at work Jessie and Benny worked on a new fireplace!! When he gives Jessie the meat and vegetables she immediately starts a stew for supper. After lunch, Henry goes back to the doctor's house and is told to organize the garage. He does a wonderful job and Dr. Moore gives him one of four hammers Henry found along with a bunch of old nails. Henry Collects another dollar and heads home, heads high and heart glad. He excitedly shows the children his new hammer and they all sit down to enjoy a wonderful meal. After dinner, Henry takes Benny's wheels and his new hammer and builds a cart. They all go to sleep, well fed and happy.

Language Arts: Literary Enrichment- Stone Soup, Narration, Review Questions
The children completed stories on their own for Literary Enrichment.  Aj is reading Hot Fox Soup in his reading book. He read the story, answered the questions and completed the activities about the story. Lily is reading Moving day and Hermit Crabs in her Reading book. She completed the questions and wrote a short narration. The kids watched the video of the story Stone Soup by Marcia Brown. Lily and Aj also completed two review question work sheets about the Box Car Children.

Science: Cooking

After Watching the video of the story Stone Soup the kids and I decided to make Beef Stew. We used many of the same ingredients the Box Car Children made in their soup. Lily and Aj worked hard chopping, measuring and sauteing. The Stew came out delicious.

Box Car Children- Chapter 5: The Explorers Find Treasure

Chapter 5

Chapter Summary-
Jessie wakes up and finds the new "refrigerator" by the waterfall works well. The children drink milk for their breakfast and Henry sets off for town to find odd jobs. When Henry leaves, the children set out to find "treasure" at a nearby dump. Dishes, cups, spoons and wheels (Benny especially wants wheels) are what they find, and together they bring their loot back to camp. After carefully scrubbing the rust off things with sand, they eagerly await Henry's return. What a wonderful surprise for Henry! Henry finally returns with many interesting-looking bundles. He builds a fire to sterilize the new dishes and the children prepare to eat.

Science: Louis Pasteur
Jessie kept the milk behind the waterfall to keep it cold in the story. I took the opportunity to introduce the famous scientist Louis Pasteur and his discovers. Pasteur made many contributions in chemistry, medicine and industry. Lily and Aj watched a movie on you-tube about him. They also read a book and completed worksheets.

Mathematics:

Both children completed an addition worksheet based on Louis Pasture.

Science: Recycling
We discussed what it means to recycle. I explained that recycling turns old things into new things. We also talked about how it saves natural resources like trees and reduces waste in landfills (dumps). I set up a recycling game for the kids where they sorted pictures of items into bins.

Art:
We went on a nature walk and collected flowers and leafs for pressing. We assembled the flower press layering the petals between tissue paper and cardboard. We are checking the flowers every 3 days or so to see if they are dried. Lily and Aj also used stamps, crayons and construction paper to make their own landscape scenes.
