 Some of The Activities we Completed while Reading Wonder!









Chapter 16-The Apprentices

Chapter Summary-
Betsy and John Ross have become great friends. John is an Apprentice at Webster's Upholstery Establishment. Betsy also becomes an apprentice at the upholstery shop. She is really happy.  Betsy is beginning to support John. She would like to Mary him and work with him. Betsy is growing up.

What we will learn in this Chapter-
History and Geography-(Tories and Patriots)


History and Geography-(Tories and Patriots)
John and Betsy enjoy discussing politics. John is a patriot and so is Betsy. Betsy parents are Tories. In this chapter we learned the difference between Tories and Patriots. We watched a you-tube video and then discussed the differences.

Chapter 15- Today and Tomorrow

Chapter Summary-

The day has finally arrives. Betsy wakes up early and does her chores and schoolwork. She heads to the fair where her sampler is on display. Her sampler is hanging right out in front of the booth. Betsy has one first place. The judges tell Betsy that they think her sampler is the best because it is made from American materials and has an American theme. She is thrilled!

What we will learn in this Chapter-
History and geography- (Nationalism)
Language Arts- (Copy Work, Writing, Comprehension, Tracing)
Fine Arts-(Coloring, Painting)


History and geography- (Nationalism)
Nationalism means to have a sense of pride and devotion. Patriotism and independence also play a part in nationalism. We talked about why we love america. We also learned about Martin Luther King and his dreams of people of all colors and races being equal. Lily and Aj read Books, Completed 2 worksheets and also drew a picture of Martin Luther King.




Language Arts- (Copy Work, Writing, Comprehension, Tracing)
Lily and Aj copied the song The Star Spangled Banner in their best handwriting. They also traced patriotic words. Then they wrote a sentence about the Liberty Bell and a short paragraph about parades. Lastly, they read a short essay about the american flag and answered comprehension question worksheets.




Fine Arts- (Painting, Coloring)
The children colored a picture of the american flag. They also used q-tips to paint a picture of the American flag.

Chapter 14-Booths for the Fair

Chapter Summary 
The fair is coming to town. Betsy is no longer excited about the fair because when she enters her sampler at the booth. The man at the booth tosses her work and asks for her name and address. Betsy is worried that she will not have a chance of winning a prize.

What we will cover in this chapter-

Betsy is not confident in her sampler. We talked about self doubt and how we can listen to ourselves and other positive influences.  I had the kids read an article about self-esteem from www.kidshealth.org. After reading the Article the kids wrote short essays on their tablets about things they love about themselves and are good at.

Chapter 13- The Sampler

Chapter Summary-
The Griscoms are sitting by the fire. Betsy decides that she is going to put the night sky, Liberty Bell and twinkling stars on her sampler. Finally after hours of work her sampler is finished and it looks beautiful. Betsy is very proud.

What we will learn from this chapter-

Science- (Why do stars Twinkle?)
Betsy wants the stars oh her sampler to "twinkle" just like the stars in the sky. I asked the kids if they know what makes a star twinkle? They said they did but could really answer the question. This was the perfect opportunity to talk about stars and sun. We read two books about stars. They also read a reading comprehension worksheet on their own. Then the completed 4 work sheets about stars and the sun. After the lesson they now know that stars twinkle because its light energy is passing through many shifting layers of the atmosphere between it and the earth which appear to make stars "twinkle".





Fine Arts-( Making a Five Pointed Star)
The kids followed directions on how to fold a piece of paper to cut out a perfect 5 pointed star. It took them a few times but they finally made a star.

Martin Luther King day 2018

The kids enjoyed learning about Martin Luther king this year. They drew pictures of Martin Luther King, painted an american flag, read books and completed two fun worksheets.






Chapter 12- The Quotation

Chapter Review-
Betsy is very excited at the possibility of sewing a sampler. She asks her father for permission and he says yes. Betsy thanks her father and sets out to find which bible verse to use. She decided on Leviticus 25:10.

What we will learn in this chapter-

Betsy and her family see that the bible is a very important part of their faith. Betsy notices how many little "books" make up the bible. This is a great opportunity to learn about the framework of the bible. Lily and Aj watched a video on you-tube about the different books of the bible. They learned about the books of the Old Testament and New Testament. They also decorated the book marks with the books of the bible on the back of the book marks. They completed a how to draw a bible worksheet and put the picture of the bible on front of their book marks.

Chapter 11- The Contest

Chapter Review-
Betsy is Highly distraught. She learns that the fair is 4 moths away. Betsy is concerned that she will not be able to compete with her handiwork against other women who are not Quakers unless she can convince her parents to make a large sampler. She has an idea of weaving a bible verse into her work. According to the Quaker religion it is important to keep the word of the lord in front of you.

What we will learn about from this chapter-

Fine Arts-(Quaker Artists and Art)
We learned about the Artist Edward Hicks. He was born in Pennsylvanian in 1790. He joined the religious group named The Quakers.  Hicks expressed himself through his paintings. He believed in peace. We Looked at some of his work and colored a picture of his one of his most famous painting, Noah's Arc. We also learned that his style of art is called American Primitive.

Chapter 10-Philadelphia Winter

Chapter Summary-
Its now the winter of 1766 and Betsy is fourteen. In Philadelphia, the winters are hard and many people become ill. The Griscom family house is no exception.This winter Betsy and her mother are the only one who remain well, taking care of there house and everyone else. Mrs. Griscom wakes Betsy in the middle of the night and frantically tells her to fetch because her father is sick. The Dr. The Dr. arrives and gives her father medication and by the following week the household is feeling better.

What we will learn-
History- (Alexander Fleming, Antibiotics )
Science-  (Sickness, Germs, Medication safety)
Language Arts- (writing)

History-(Alexander Fleming)
The kids learned that Alexander Fleming Invented Penicillin. It was the first antibiotic discovered. Lily and Aj watched a video on you-tube about how Penicillin was discovered. They also completed a worksheet and a word search about Fleming.




Science-(Medication Safety, Sickness, Germs)
We talked about the difference between over the counter vs. Perception medicine. We also talked about never taking medicine or drugs without the supervision of a parent or trusted adult. The kids completed a Venn-diagram worksheet about medicines. We also learned to read medicine labels. Lily and Aj  completed a pre-assignment test. They kids  read 2 books about germs. (worksheets and lesson plan was from scholastic.com- All about Medicine)












Language Arts- (writing)
Lily and Aj completed a writing assignment . The assignment was to write about something you would like to discover one day. They used there tablets to type their answers.
