The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 18 and 19 (Conclusion)

Summary-

Dr. Carver spends more time giving speeches all around the world. He has been at the college for 40 years. The college hires a artist to make a statue of him.  The US post office honors Dr. Carver with a commemorative stamp with his picture on it.

What we learned-

Carver loved plants and painting. The kids Painted still life paintings of plants just like George Washington  Carver.






Science:Synthetics
Dr Carver worked on  synthetic chemistry. He worked on developing new substances. We watched a video on you-tube about Natural products vs. Synthetics. 



Lily and Aj enjoyed reading this book  about the life of George Washington Carter. They enjoyed this book so much we read it very quickly and didn't complete as many activities as I would have liked. This book explains what George had done while he was alive and all of his accomplishments in agriculture, soil, and other practical uses. He had a long interesting life full of discovery built around helping others. I think the kids learned a lot about George Washington carvers life and hope to more activities  with the next Beyond FIAR book.

Summary-
Dr. Carver continues to work on his experiments with sweet potatoes and then begins to work with peanuts.

We did a worksheet on where peanuts grow. We also watched a video and read books about how peanut butter is made. We went and made our own peanut butter at our local grocery store

The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 14 an 15

Chapter Summary-

Dr. Carver and his students continue to research better ways to grow crops. They begin to plant sweet potatoes. He helps Tuskegee build a wonderful little school. Carver is happy he can help more people.

Dr Carver has been teaching for 10 years at Tuskegee. His students have a wonderful new lab. He was forced to give up teaching but he still has a great relationship with his students. He has many speaking engagements and sometimes teaches nature classes for young children.

We have a garden in our home that kids help take care of. We grow strawberries, tomatoes and aloe along with plants and trees.

The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 12 an 13

Chapter Summary-
George settles into his new role at the school. He helps sets up "mock" farms so his students can research and learn about what helps soil and crops. All the student love George. He teaches them to be more successful farmers. He also teaches them to sew and cook. Dr Carver was helping his students build stronger lives, healthier families and prosperous farms.

What we will learn about-
Science- What role does nitrogen play? What are Legumes?

Lily and Aj watched a video about nitrogen and  Legumes. They also completed a worksheet.







The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 10 and 11

Chapter 10 an 11

Chapter Summary-
George starts college and makes many fiends. He begins to paint but learns that the county is not ready to accept a black artist. He decides to peruse a degree in Science and agriculture instead. George transfers to Iowa state college and learns about farming an how crops grow. Booker T Washington leans about George and asks him to come teach at Tuskegee normal school.

The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 8 and 9

Chapter 8 and 9 Summary- 

George receives an acceptance letter from a University. He saves enough money to sign up for classes in the fall. When he arrives he goes to he head office. The learns that the college doesn't accept Negros and he is heart broken. He decides to stay in the town to work and save money. He buys a farm of his home. George try's to grow crops for 2 years but doesn't have any luck. He gives up and moves back to the east.

George opens a laundry mat after traveling for 3 months. He finds out he has been accepted to a Simpsons college in 1890. He is delighted and cant wait to go.

The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 6 and 7

Chapter 6 and 7 Summary-

George Leave Neosho and his good friends and sets off for Kansas. When he reaches his destination he meets Mrs. Payne. He decided to live with her and her husband. He is attending school and is happy with the Paynes. Then one day he witnesses a mob beat a black man to death in town. He lives the town and never goes back.

George moves town to town and finally settles in Olathe, Kansas. He finds a nice family to live with and helps with the laundry. George is now in 6th grade and wants to learn more about college. George decides he needs a middle name so he doesn't get mixed up with another man named George Carver who lives in the town.

What we will learn in these chapters-
