The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 4

Chapter Summary-

George begins to attend church with Mr. and Mrs. Baynham. He loves to sing. He is also excited to attend Sunday school. He learns about Noah and the Ark but he really wants to learn math and science. He begins to think he wants to move to Neosho so he can attend school. George sets out by himself.

Lily and Aj sing in the choir at church already. We talked about how every voice is slightly different. We also talked about range, pitch and scale.  We also watched a video of George Washington Carver showing that he had a very high pitched voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkx2iHDOHLk.

Lily and Aj completed worksheets about George Washington Carvers life.

The Story of George Washinton Carver by Eva Moore- Chapter 1

Chapter 1 Summary-

Moses Carver, and his wife Susan, live in Diamond Grove, Missouri in the year 1864. One night the robbers steal the slave girl Mary and her baby son George.Mr. Carver is outraged and hires a man named Bentley to go and bring back Mary and the baby but returns with only the child. The Carvers decide to keep George along with his brother Jim. The baby some day will be known as George Washington Carver.

The story of George Washing Carver begins during the time of the Civil war. The kids learned about the civil war by making a lap book. We used Easy Peasy Online Homeschool 
for the printouts. (https://allinonehomeschool.com) We also Watched a video about George Washinton Carver, googled Georges home  and found Missouri on a Map.

Helen Keller Chapter 8

Helen Keller Chapter 8

Chapter Summary- 
 Teacher enrolls Helen in the Perkins Institute- same school teacher went to as a girl. The same school Mr. Keller wrote to when he asked for help with Helen. The teachers and students at the school love Helen. Helen loves her classes and the books she is given to read. She never knew how much was available to her. When the books are not in Braille Helen asks teacher to read them to her. Helen is 9 years old now, and she spells so fast with her fingers.She decides to learn how to talk like a regular child. The teacher agrees. Helen works very hard to learn how to talk. Her first sentence is "I am not dumb now."

Helen Keller Chapter 7

Helen Keller Chapter 7

Chapter Summary-
Teacher makes sure that Helen has all of the same experiences that any other child would. Helen gets to go to the zoo, attend the circus, bake Christmas cookies and enjoy a canary for a pet. Helen is dong very well. Soon, she begin to learn to read Braille- the raised symbol language of the blind. In just one year, Helen has learned so much! Teacher knows its time to learn even more.

Science- Primates and Apes 
Fine Arts- Arts and Crafts

Langue Arts- Completing review questions
The kids completed a worksheet about Chapter 7


History and Geography- The Circus
The kids watched a video on the history of the Ringling Brothers circus. They also completed Language Arts worksheets and coloring sheets about the circus. They also enjoyed a picture book about the circus.









Science- Primates and Apes 
Lily and Aj read books about animals that are in the circus






Fine Arts- Arts and Crafts
Lily and Aj made Circus Tents with acrylic paint, construction paper and tissue paper.

Helen Keller Chapter 3

Helen Keller Chapter 3 

Parent Summary-
Mr Keller's letter to the Perkins Institute is soon answered. A teacher named Annie Sullivan is coming to help teach and instruct Helen. When she finally arrives one morning, Helen decides she doesn't like her. She has no idea who Miss Sullivan is and doesn't understand that she is there to help her. She gets in a fight over a doll she has found and Helen punches Annie in the face. Helen is misbehaving because Helen has gotten away with so much for so long. Anne is not sure how to help her but she will try.

Fine Arts: Movie Recommendation- The Miracle Worker

We watched this movie. It was excellent supporting material for the book.  The kids enjoyed watching it.

Chapter 9-Sarah Plain and Tall (Final Chapter and activities)

Chapter 9 Summary-
After the storm, Papa keeps his promise to Sarah and teachers her to driver the wagon so she can go to town herself. Caleb and Anna are frightened. The only reason the children can see for Sarah's trip to town is to leave them. Why else would she want to be by herself?

On the following day, Sarah gets dressed and kisses them goodbye as she leaves for town. The day goes by slowly. Caleb sees a yellow  bonnet in the distance as the children watch for Sarah on the front porch.

Caleb shares his worries with Sarah- that her thought she would leave them because she missed the sea. Sarah said she would miss Papa and the children more. Then she showed them her purchases while in town- colored pencils for their pictures of the sea, candles for diner and seeds for her garden and a book of songs to sing.

Language Arts-(Writing, and Making connections) The kids continued with their journal. After reading the nine chapter they had to complete a worksheet answering questions about the story and colored a picture of the family.They also made predictions, wrote chapter titles, asked question, and  made connections about the story. (I used www.teacherspayteachers.com for the journal paperwork.)







Fine Arts- (Making Jewelry)
It took about a week for the rock tumbler to finish polishing the rocks but it was worth it. The kids enjoyed making jewelry with their finished rocks. 













Extra Fun-(watching the Movie)
We borrowed  the movie Sarah Plain and Tall from the library. Lily and Aj loved the story and characters. 


Field Trip- ( Cahoon Museum, Art Class) 
Lily and Aj took  an art class today. We also had the opportunity to explore the Cahoon Museum. What a great experience! 
*The class description: Marine animals have been featured in art throughout the centuries. We will look at the way some artists have represented these animals in the past and then create our own. Two dimensional and three-dimensional options/materials will be available.










Lily and Aj Enjoyed the reading story and completing the activities that went along with book Sarah Plain and Tall. After reading the story the kids and I reflected back over the story and decided that the author did a great job writing and telling the story about the Witting family! We cant wait to read the other books in this series including Skylark.
