Chapter 11- A Job on a Train

Chapter 11 Summary-

Mr. Edison comes home with important news one day: the Grand Trunk Railroad has finally completed the Track from Port Huron to Detroit. Tom is elated! After dinner, Tom reads an article about the new railroad completion in The Detroit Free Press. The next day there is to be a celebration and unveiling of the new locomotive and couch cars. The Edisons decide to attend.

Wearing their best finery, they arrive and the crowd is already swarming. Tom runs to the front so he can see the shiny new locomotive and couches. Suddenly, Tom overhears a conversation beside him. An older man is saying to another man that they will need to find " a boy to sell newspapers and candy on the train each day" as it travels from Port Huron to Detroit and back. Tom thinks quickly. He needs a real job to buy more chemicals for his laboratory and he loves trains! He walks bravely over to the men and he asks if he can have the job. They ask to see his parents, and Mr. and Mrs. Edison give their permission. Tom Cant Believe it! He i going to work on that beautiful new train and he will be able to expand his laboratory.

Language arts: Similes and Metaphors- 
On page 131 Tom describes the smokestack on the train as a "tall silk hat". I introduced similes and metaphors because of this statement.The kids read 2 books and completed a worksheet about Similes and Metaphors.

Tom was fascinated but the powerful steam engine just like my children are. We watched 2 you-tube videos about steam engines. We also read a book on how steam engines work and colored a picture of a steam engine and its inventor.
