Chapter 2- The Sour Dough

Chapter Summary- 
Betsy makes Sour dough bread. She  becomes panicked when she cant find the bread. Laughing and thankful she finds it under a bowl on the table.

What we will learn in this Chapter-
Language Arts- Word Search
History and Geography- Sour Dough and the Pioneers.
Fine Arts- Corn Cob Doll 

Langue Arts- (word Search)
The kids completed a word search with words related to Betsy Ross.




History and Geography- Sour Dough and the Pioneers
The kids watched a video on you-tube on making bread. Then they tried sour dough bread for a snack.  We also talked about Pioneers and why they made this type of bread.








Fine Arts- Corn Cob Doll
The kids shucked real corn cobs. Then they watched a tutorial on you-tube on how to make corn cob dolls. Both kids loved this activity and were excited about the dolls they made.

Mythological story and arts and craft

We read a story about Medusa, Athena and Perseus. Then kids made the charters in a craft project.



Night of the Moonjellies ( 2017)

Title: Night of the Moonjellies

Summary: After the last customer at his Gram's hot dog stand is served, Mark, who is spending the summer with his grandparent, sails off with Gram and finds a nighttime sea full of moonjellies.


The second time rowing this story was more fun than the first time. The kids are older and wiser.... They were able to learn more about jelly fish and really put there hart into the activities. 


Social Studies- (New England) 
The kids completed a worksheet on the New England states.


Mathematics-( Word Problems)
The children completed a word problem worksheet. The questions related to the story and were addition, subtraction and multiplication.


Science-(Jelly fish)
The children spent time watching videos and learning about Jellyfish. They learned about their life cycle, migration pattern and body. They also learned about what they eat. They made a life cycle paper chart.




Field Trip- (Ocean exploration-finding Jellyfish)
The kids went Jellyfish fishing. They caught jellyfish in nets and examined them with their eyes. We learned that the Ones we found were called Sea Nettles. They also found a few crabs!
















Extra fun-(Art- coloring)
The kids colored a picture of the ocean.


Field Trip to the Boston Aquarium
Looking at Jelly fish at the aquarium.

Chapter 1- The Choice

Chapter Summary-
The story starts off in 1758. Betsy Ross is just 6 years old. This chapter is about Betsy and her early experiences with sewing. Her mother gives her her first  silver thimble and she tries woodworking. Betsy learns to be true to herself and not doing things just to prove to others wrong. Betsy knows to be true to her own heart.

History and Geography- Thee and Thou
After reading the first chapter I asked the children what they noticed about the language of this book.  They said that they recognized that the form of speech was different then what they use today. (Thee and Thou) I explained that it was "King James English" and it was used as part of the religious group know as the Quakers.

Language Arts- Personification
"Betsy though of the winning old saw that had hit her over the head and bitten  her in the finger". The author used personification in this sentence. This gave us the opportunity to learn about this literacy device.The kids completed a personification worksheet after we discussed what personification was.



Fine Arts-(Wood Working)
Lily and Aj worked with tools to build things out of wood and nails. Even thorough they never finished there project, they had fun and learned about working with tools.
