Marie Curie: Chapter 6 - A French Education

Chapter Summary-
When Manya Arrives in France to attend the Sorbonne, she changes her name for various reasons. She learns French very quickly and becomes absorbed in her studies.  Unfortunately she becomes too absorbed and forgets to take care of her health. She forgery’s to eat and sleep which makes her very ill. In 1893 she earns her masters in Physics. She wins a large scholarship from poland. Years Later she pays back the scholarship because she wants another student to have the opportunity she did.

Science- Nutrition and the Brain
Marie studies really hard and forgets to eat and sleep. This causes her to become sick. We watched a video called You are what you eat: Saturday Morning, CBS. This showed the kids the importance of what you eat and how it relates to your brain health. They also completed brain worksheets and we looked at what the average family ate in different parts of the world.

Skylark by Patricia Maclachlan Chapter 6

Chapter Summary-
On the way home from town, the Wittings see a fire in the meadow. Quickly they work together to soak down sacks and beat the fire back. The fire is out soon, but Papa warns the family they must be on constant alert for fire. The drought is causing everything to be a fire hazard.

We read a worksheet and completed questions about the Great Chicago Fire. We also read two books.

Snowflake Bentley 2019

Snowflake Bentley

This is a warm-hearted story of persistence and passion as Wilson Bentley triumphantly captures a snowflake in a photograph!

                                       



Art- (Paper Cutting)
The kids folded paper then cut it to make snowflakes. They all came out different  and it was a fun art project for the kids.




Science-(Microscope)
William Bentley was a scientist who used a microscope to look at snowflakes. We used a microscope to look at snowflakes and salt. The kids learned how to make there own slides.




Winter science- (co-op with friends)
We learned about winter science with our friends from our co-op.  We talked about what the position of the sun is when its winter in our area. We pretend we were seals and performed an experiment about blubber. We also looked at snow under a microscope and listened to presentations about Antarctica, animals from Antarctica and seals. Lily and Aj gave their  Presentation On Wilson Bentley. We also ate yummy winter themed snacks

Helen Keller Chapter 9

Chapter Summary-
Helen becomes more and more independent. She learns to ride a horse, swim by herself and even rides a tandem bike with  a friend. Helen decides she wants to go to college. She and teacher head off to Radcliffe College for Women. Helen is forced to work twice as hard as other girls. Both women go to class each day. She reads so much Braille books her fingers bleed. Helen Graduates college and she is the most educated deaf-blind girl in the world.

What we will learn in this Chapter:

Helen Keller Chapter 8

Chapter Summary- 
 Teacher enrolls Helen in the Perkins Institute- same school teacher went to as a girl. The same school Mr. Keller wrote to when he asked for help with Helen. The teachers and students at the school love Helen. Helen loves her classes and the books she is given to read. She never knew how much was available to her. When the books are not in Braille Helen asks teacher to read them to her. Helen is 9 years old now, and she spells so fast with her fingers.She decides to learn how to talk like a regular child. The teacher agrees. Helen works very hard to learn how to talk. Her first sentence is "I am not dumb now."
